Except for the rubber, tods chaussures, all these materials absorb water, so a ball exposed to high humidity will gain water weight. The extra weight might not cut a whole lot off the length of a long drive–but even a reduction of, say, only 0.5 percent equates to 2 feet on a 400-foot drive. That could be the difference between a home run and a catch at the wall.

Lowered RestitutionWhere humidity may have its greatest effect on baseballs is in something called the „coefficient of restitution.“ That’s the term physicists use for „bounciness.“ The higher the coefficient of restitution of an object, the more elastic it is in a collision. A rubber kickball has a high coefficient, for example, while a bowling ball has a low one. Baseballs fall somewhere in the middle and their coefficient of restitution can be significantly affected by humidity. Research published in the journal „The Physics Teacher“ in 2004 found a direct correlation between the two and concluded that going from 0 percent humidity to 100 percent humidity could shave as much as 28 feet from the length of a fly ball. The Rockies store their baseballs at 50 percent humidity.

Better GripThe outer covering of a baseball is leather. Just like any animal skin–including yours–leather „breathes.“ In higher humidity, it expands and softens slightly as it absorbs moisture from the air. In drier air, it contracts slightly, pulling taut and becoming harder. Pitchers say those effects of humidity give them a better grip, which allows them more control over the ball. Then-Rockies pitcher Jeremy Affeldt told USA Today in 2007, the year the Rockies went to the World Series, that he could easily tell when he was practicing with a ball that hadn’t been stored in the humidor. „They’re like an ice cube,“ he told the newspaper.
